IS BEING A DENTAL HYGIENIST JUST A JOB?
With over 20 years of experience in the dental field across three different countries, I began my career as a dental nurse and receptionist before advancing to become a qualified dental hygienist.

Initially, it was simply just a job!
Through my passion and determination, I believe it evolved into something more meaningful than just a job for me.
I believe I have a better understanding of my patients, and if I don't, I am definitely eager to gain a deeper understanding of them.
So many questions and some many possible answers.
Why did they come?
Why did they come to see me?
Why do they trust me?
Why don't they trust me?
Why didn't they come to see me earlier?
Why do they come over and over again?

TRUST
The more experienced I became, the more I understood that trust is everything.
The more your patients know about you, the easier your job will be, as they trust that what you are doing is in their best.
Consider the patient you encountered for the first time - your new patient. Alternatively, observe a new patient during your next encounter.
Your every move is being observed...
They are proceeding at a slow pace...
They need explanation of everything at great detail....
They haven't built trust with you
See the patient second time. Can you notice any changes? It seems somewhat easier.
The patient knows your name. They know what you are going to do.
Everything seems faster.
Perhaps, they are looking forward to their appointment.
They are looking forward end result - clean, shiny teeth... or a new filling...
You start to relax a bit more and maybe joke a bit as well.
TIME
Give it time.
Give it more time.
Trust takes time to build because it is building a relationship.
Make sure to allocate more time in your schedule for new patients compared to the time you allocate for returning patients.
PATIENTCE
Building a relationship takes time. Be patient.
REMEMBER THEIR NAME
It is simple. Right?
RESPECT THEIR TIME
